The parent's guide at parentsguidetoai.ca addresses academic integrity in its FAQ section with a direct answer: using AI to brainstorm or study may be acceptable; submitting AI-generated work as original work may violate school expectations. When in doubt, ask the teacher.

That's accurate, and it's deliberately brief — because the honest answer to "is AI cheating?" is "it depends." This post unpacks what it depends on, how to find out what applies to your child's situation, and how to have the conversation that actually helps.


Why the answer is different for every assignment

Academic integrity policies have not caught up with AI. That's not a criticism — it's just reality. The technology changed faster than institutions could draft policy. What you find across BC schools right now is a patchwork: some teachers have detailed AI disclosure requirements, some have broad bans, some have embraced AI as a classroom tool, and some haven't updated their expectations in three years.

This means that "is AI cheating?" is genuinely the wrong question to ask. The right question is:

What does this teacher, for this class, for this specific assignment, expect?

The answer to that question is the only one that matters. And the only way to get it is to ask.


What teachers are actually dealing with

It helps to understand the position teachers are in right now.

Many teachers are navigating AI policy without clear top-down direction. The Vancouver School Board's introduction of Copilot 13+ came with general guidance about responsible use, but individual assignment-level decisions are still largely at the discretion of each teacher.1 A Grade 9 English teacher and a Grade 11 Biology teacher at the same school may have completely different expectations about AI — and both may be reasonable.

Teachers are also dealing with significant uncertainty about detection. AI detection tools like Turnitin's AI Detection exist but are imperfect. They produce false positives — flagging work written by humans as AI-generated — and false negatives — missing AI work that was edited or paraphrased.2 Experienced teachers are getting better at recognizing AI writing patterns, but it's not a science.

The result is that a student who uses AI carelessly risks being accused of academic dishonesty even if what they submitted is technically within the rules. And a student who doesn't ask can get in trouble not because they did something clearly wrong, but because they made an assumption about expectations that turned out to be incorrect.


The spectrum of what schools allow

It's worth knowing that "AI policy" is not binary — it's a spectrum. Here are the positions your child's school or teacher might hold:

No AI at all. Some teachers and some assignments prohibit any AI use, including brainstorming, grammar checking, or research assistance. This is most common for high-stakes assessments and writing assignments where demonstrating independent skill is the explicit goal.

Disclosure required. AI assistance was permitted, but the student must note where and how it was used. Similar to citing sources. This is becoming more common at the secondary level.

AI as a tool, with conditions. AI can be used to understand concepts, brainstorm, or check grammar — but not to write the final product. The student's own thinking must be clearly demonstrated.

AI permitted with acknowledgement. AI was used as part of the process, and the student is expected to reflect on how and why. Some progressive educators treat this the way they treat calculator use in math — a legitimate tool for the task.

AI integration as part of the assignment. The student is expected to use AI and to evaluate or critique its output. This is increasingly common in digital literacy and media studies courses.

The parent's guide puts the student's responsibility simply in Section 8: "Tell teachers when AI has been used, if required." Getting clear on whether it's required is the first step.


How to find out what applies

Here's a practical approach your child can use — and that you can encourage.

Read the assignment instructions. Many teachers who have clear AI policies state them explicitly in the assignment sheet. If it's not there, ask.

Ask the teacher directly. This sounds obvious, but many students don't do it because they're afraid of signalling that they were thinking about using AI. Reframe it: asking the question is evidence of academic integrity, not a lack of it. "Mr. X, for this essay, are we allowed to use AI tools? If so, do we need to note that?" is a completely appropriate question.

Check the course outline or acceptable use policy. Some teachers include AI policy in their course outline at the start of the year. Some schools have a school-wide academic integrity policy that can be found on the school's website or through the principal's office.

Ask at the start, not the end. The worst time to discover that AI use was prohibited is after the assignment is submitted. The best time is before your child starts working on it.

If your child genuinely cannot find a clear answer, a reasonable default is: use AI to understand, not to produce. Use it to help you learn the material, not to generate the text you hand in.


The conversation to have at home

A few questions that open a real conversation rather than a lecture:

  • "For your assignments this year, have any of your teachers explained what's okay and not okay when it comes to AI?"
  • "If you used AI to help with an essay, and your teacher found out, what do you think would happen?"
  • "Do you think there's a difference between asking a friend to explain a concept and asking AI to explain it? What about asking AI to write the explanation for you?"

This last question is worth sitting with, because it gets at what's actually at stake. Academic work is not just about producing a document — it's about demonstrating that the student has developed understanding. A student who uses AI to write their essay but can explain and expand on every idea in it has probably learned something. A student who submits AI output they haven't read has not.

The parent's guide suggests a test in Section 8:

"A useful question for parents to ask is: 'Could you explain this work without using the AI?'"

That question is a better gauge of academic integrity than any detection tool.


What to do if something goes wrong

If your child is accused of academic dishonesty related to AI use, the first step is the same as any school discipline situation: stay calm, listen to what actually happened, and get clear on what the school's process is.

Most schools have a formal academic integrity process. Ask for it in writing. Understand what the allegation is and what the evidence is. Your child has a right to explain their process and reasoning.

If AI detection software was used to flag the work, know that these tools are imperfect. A finding from an AI detector is not proof — it's evidence to be weighed alongside the student's own explanation. Schools are generally aware of this.

If the situation is serious or escalates, the school counsellor, the district's parent liaison, or — in significant cases — a lawyer can help you understand your child's rights. Legal Aid BC can assist if cost is a barrier.


A note on academic integrity beyond assignments

The academic integrity conversation is sometimes framed narrowly around homework. It's worth expanding it.

AI is changing what "doing your own work" means across the board. When a student uses AI to draft emails, create presentations, or prepare for debates, the same questions apply. The underlying principle — being honest about the help you received, and being able to stand behind and explain your own work — doesn't change based on the medium.

Building that principle into the way your family talks about AI is more durable than any list of rules.


The short version:

  • "Is AI cheating?" is the wrong question. What matters is what each teacher expects for each assignment.
  • Schools are still developing clear AI policies. The rules vary teacher by teacher, class by class.
  • The best approach: read the instructions, ask the teacher before starting, and when in doubt, use AI to understand — not to produce.
  • The real test: could your child explain their work without the AI? If yes, they've probably learned something. If no, the AI may have done the work for them.
  • If something goes wrong, ask for the school's process in writing and know that AI detection tools are not infallible.
