The parent's guide at parentsguidetoai.ca lists accessibility as one of AI's most significant opportunities, noting that AI may help students who face challenges with reading, writing, language barriers, organization, and executive functioning.

That sentence is worth expanding considerably. For families of children with learning differences, AI tools represent one of the more meaningful shifts in assistive technology in years. This post covers what that actually looks like: the use cases, the practical tools, and the conversations worth having with your child's school.

This post is not about lowering expectations. It's about removing barriers.


The difference between a shortcut and a support

The concern that comes up most often when AI and learning disabilities are discussed together is: "Are we just making it easier for the child to avoid developing skills they need?"

This is a legitimate question, and it applies to assistive technology more broadly. Is the student who uses a calculator avoiding developing arithmetic skills? Is the student who uses text-to-speech avoiding developing reading skills?

The answer depends on how the tool is used. This is exactly the conversation to have with your child's teacher and learning support team.

Used as a support, AI helps a student access the content and demonstrate their understanding, while the underlying skill development continues in parallel. Used as a replacement, AI produces the output without the student engaging with the learning.

A student with dyslexia who uses AI to read aloud text they couldn't decode independently, and then engages with and discusses that text, has accessed the curriculum. That's the goal. A student who has AI produce a written answer they haven't thought about has not learned.

The distinction is real and it matters. But the presence of the tool is not the problem.


Specific use cases by learning difference

Dyslexia and reading difficulties

Text-to-speech has been an important tool for students with dyslexia for years. What AI adds:

  • Comprehension support: AI can summarize a complex text at a lower reading level, or explain an unfamiliar word in context, allowing students to focus on ideas rather than decoding.
  • Multisensory formats: AI can convert text to audio, to bullet points, to visual outlines. Different representations help different learners.
  • Writing support: Speech-to-text combined with AI grammar assistance can allow a student whose ideas outpace their typing and spelling to produce written work that reflects their actual thinking.2

Tools like Microsoft's Immersive Reader (built into many school tools, including Copilot 13+), Apple's accessibility features, and AI-powered reading apps are available in many school environments already.1

ADHD and executive function

Executive functioning (planning, organizing, prioritizing, managing time, starting tasks) is often significantly affected in students with ADHD. AI tools can help:

  • Breaking tasks into steps: "I have a history essay due Friday. Can you help me break this into steps with time estimates?" is a legitimate and effective use of an AI assistant.
  • Focus scaffolding: AI can help a student who is overwhelmed by an open-ended assignment to narrow the scope and identify a starting point.
  • Organization tools: AI can help create outlines, checklists, and study schedules that a student with ADHD may struggle to generate independently.
  • Reducing the activation barrier: Many students with ADHD experience difficulty getting started ("task paralysis"). Having an AI generate a rough first draft, which the student then edits and adds to, can reduce this barrier in a way that still requires genuine engagement.3

The goal is not to outsource thinking but to remove the friction that prevents the student from accessing their own thinking.

Autism spectrum conditions

Students on the autism spectrum have highly varied needs, and any generalization is limited. That said, some consistent areas where AI has shown promise:

  • Social scripting support: AI can help a student understand social situations, rehearse conversations, or draft messages in contexts where the social expectations feel unclear.
  • Low-judgment communication: AI provides a consistent, non-reactive communication partner, which some autistic students find easier to engage with than human conversation in high-pressure moments.
  • Sensory and processing supports: AI tools that convert one format to another (text to audio, complex language to simpler language) can reduce processing load.
  • Special interest engagement: AI can engage with a student's area of intense interest in depth, which can be motivating and can also be a bridge to other learning content.

Language acquisition and newcomer students

AI translation and language support tools have meaningfully expanded access for students learning English as an additional language. A student who can use AI to understand assignment instructions in their home language, and then to check that their English response conveys what they intended, has a genuine access tool.

This is an area where AI can reduce barriers for newcomer families specifically, including parents who want to be involved in their child's schooling but face language barriers in accessing school communications.


What to ask your child's school

If your child has a learning difference and you want to understand how AI tools fit into their support, these questions are worth raising with your child's teacher or the school's learning support team:

  • "Is AI use allowed as part of [child's name]'s accommodations or support plan?"
  • "Does the school's Microsoft Copilot 13+ include Immersive Reader or other accessibility features?"
  • "If my child uses AI as a learning support tool, do they need to disclose that on assignments?"
  • "What training or support is available for [child's name] to learn how to use AI tools effectively for their needs?"
  • "Can we document AI as an assistive tool in the IEP or support plan?"

If your child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a student support plan, AI tools are worth discussing explicitly as a category of assistive technology, with clear documentation of how they will be used and what the expectations are around disclosure.


What to watch for

AI tools for accessibility are powerful, but they are not neutral. A few things to keep in mind:

The tool should support independence over time, not dependency. The goal of assistive technology is to help the student build confidence and competence. If AI tools are helping your child access more of their curriculum and feel more capable, that's success. If your child is becoming more avoidant of difficulty rather than more resilient, the tool may be filling the gap in a way that doesn't serve long-term growth.

AI is not a substitute for proper assessment and support. If your child is struggling, the first step is proper assessment and appropriate support, not "let them use AI." AI is one tool among many, not a replacement for learning support, occupational therapy, or other services.

Privacy applies here too. When your child uses AI tools to work through school material, they should not be entering personal health information, specific diagnoses, or other sensitive personal information into public AI tools. School-managed tools like Copilot 13+ have additional protections; public tools do not.


A note on invisible disabilities

Learning differences are often invisible. A child who looks perfectly capable to a teacher who doesn't know them well may be working significantly harder than their classmates just to produce the same output, and still producing less because the underlying barriers are real.

One of the genuinely valuable things about AI accessibility tools is that they can be low-visibility in the right circumstances. A student who reads a text using AI audio support looks like a student reading. A student who uses AI to help organize their essay outline looks like a student planning. This reduces the stigma that has historically made students reluctant to use assistive technology.

That reduced stigma is worth protecting. The conversation about disclosure and AI should be handled carefully for students with learning differences, with the child's input and dignity as a central consideration.


The short version:

  • For students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, language barriers, and other learning differences, AI tools can meaningfully reduce barriers to accessing curriculum. The point is genuine support, not a shortcut past the learning.
  • The distinction between a support and a shortcut matters: is the student engaging with the learning? If yes, the tool is working. If the tool is producing the output without engagement, it's a replacement.
  • Ask your child's school how AI tools fit into accommodations and support plans. If your child has an IEP or support plan, AI as assistive technology is worth documenting explicitly.
  • AI tools don't replace proper assessment, learning support, or therapy. They're one tool among many.
  • Disclosure conversations for students with learning differences need to be handled with care for the student's dignity and self-advocacy.
