We've spent a few posts looking at what AI gets wrong. This one is about what it gets right.

When AI is used as a learning tool — to understand something, to get a summary, to break a complex idea into plain language — it's genuinely useful. And these are skills that matter as much for parents as they do for children.

Section 6 of the parent's guide describes AI's learning support uses with students in mind. But every example in that list also works for a parent who is trying to understand something quickly. This post gives you three concrete tasks to try this week, with instructions.


Why learning support isn't just for students

The parent's guide puts it plainly: AI can help by explaining difficult concepts, summarizing complex reading, creating practice quizzes, and generating study guides.

Think about how often a version of that would be useful for you.

You get a three-page letter from your child's school about a new policy. You need to understand it, but you're already late for something else. A twenty-second AI summary would save you ten minutes of slow reading.

Your child asks for help with a topic you barely remember from school — or never learned at all. AI can give you a quick refresher in plain language before you sit down together.

You want to understand AI well enough to have a real conversation with your child's teacher. You could read several articles, or you could ask AI to explain the key ideas and then use Post 5's verification routine to check what matters.

One example of how I use these tools every day, is to kick off a security analysis. I have to start by building an understanding of the business, system, or application that I am going to analyze, so using an AI tool to quickly assess all of documents, source code, or information that I have to explain where everything is, and organize the assessment I need to do is a great way to quickly estimate the size and complexity of the task ahead of me. I still need to build the knowledge and do the analysis, but sizing the project quickly is very helpful in prioritizing my work and organizing my tasks.

This is the difference between using AI to understand something and using AI to produce something. When you use AI to understand, you still do the thinking. The AI is a translator, not a ghostwriter.


Three things to try this week

1. Summarize a school document

Find the last long letter, policy document, or newsletter you received from your child's school. Open ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Claude and type something like:

"Here is a document from my child's school. Please summarize it in plain language, in five bullet points."

Then paste the document text. The AI will give you a clear summary in seconds. Check it against the original to make sure nothing important got dropped.

This is a low-stakes way to practice using AI for something useful, and to get a feel for how much you can trust the summary on different types of content.

One thing to watch: Don't paste anything in the document that includes personal student information — names, ID numbers, addresses. If the document is generic (a school newsletter, a policy overview), it's fine. If it includes your child's specific personal details, remove those first.

2. Ask AI to explain a term from the parent's guide glossary

The parent's guide at parentsguidetoai.ca includes a glossary of AI and digital literacy terms — from "algorithm" to "training data." Pick any term you weren't completely sure about and ask AI to explain it.

Try a prompt like:

"Explain what a 'large language model' is in plain language, as if you're talking to a parent who doesn't have a tech background."

Then read the response. Does it match what you understood from the guide? Does it add anything useful? Is it actually in plain language, or did it still sneak in some jargon?

This exercise does two things. It builds your understanding of AI terminology. And it gives you a feel for how AI handles explanation tasks — which is directly relevant to how your child might use it for learning.

3. Generate questions for a parent-teacher conversation about AI

This one is a bit more creative. If you have a parent-teacher conference coming up — or just want to be prepared for one — try this prompt:

"I'm a parent of a secondary school student in Vancouver, BC. My child's school is rolling out Microsoft Copilot for students. What questions should I ask the teacher about how AI is being used in the classroom? I don't know much about AI or the risks, Ask me some questions to help me understand better what I might be concerned about."

The list you get will probably include some obvious questions and some you hadn't thought of. That's useful. It's not a replacement for your own thinking, but it's a good starting point.


The distinction that matters: understanding vs. producing

This is worth saying clearly, because it applies to both parents and children.

Using AI to understand means: you read the AI's response, you process it, and then you think and act on your own. The output of that process is your thinking, informed by the AI.

Using AI to produce means: you take the AI's output and present it as your own, without really engaging with it. The output of that process is the AI's thinking, with your name on it.

The parent's guide applies this distinction to students and homework. But it applies to adult life too. If you ask AI to draft an email to your child's teacher and send it without reading it carefully, you're presenting AI output as your own without checking it. That's a different kind of risk — not academic integrity, but accuracy and tone.

AI is a starting point. Your judgment is the final step.


The short version:

  • AI is genuinely useful for learning tasks: summarizing, explaining, generating questions.
  • The key distinction: using AI to understand something (good) vs. using it to produce something you didn't think through (risky).
  • Three tasks to try: summarize a school document, ask AI to explain a glossary term, generate parent-teacher questions.
  • For these tasks, Claude and Perplexity are particularly good choices.
  • Check the output — AI summaries can miss things, and AI explanations can still include jargon.
